About Stepney Shahjalal Mosque & Cultural Centre
Local Muslims in Stepney prayed in each other's homes until a Stepney Shahjalal Mosque Committee was formed in 1981. In 1985 prayers moved into the caretaker's hut in Shandy Park, which held about 50 worshippers. Portable cabins were added from 1990, and the mosque was registered as a place of worship in 1992.
The mosque became a registered charity in 1999–2000 and bought the freehold of its land from Tower Hamlets Council in 2002. Planning permission for a new mosque and community facilities was granted in 2010, and a foundation stone was laid on 7 November 2016.
