East London Mosque and London Muslim Centre is one of the largest and most influential mosques in Western Europe, serving the vibrant Muslim community of Tower Hamlets and East London. The mosque was founded in 1941, with the current purpose-built structure on Whitechapel Road opening in 1985 and substantially expanded with the addition of the London Muslim Centre in 2004.
Located in the heart of Whitechapel — one of London's most historically significant Muslim neighbourhoods — the mosque draws an extraordinarily diverse congregation from across the Bengali, Somali, Pakistani, and Arab communities, as well as converts from all backgrounds. It is one of the few mosques in the UK capable of holding multiple simultaneous Jummah congregations, with capacity for over 7,000 worshippers across its prayer halls.
East London Mosque runs a comprehensive programme of education, welfare and community services, including an Islamic school, marriage services, a funeral service and extensive outreach. It has hosted heads of state, senior politicians and religious leaders and is frequently called upon as a representative voice for the UK Muslim community. Taraweeh during Ramadan draws thousands of worshippers each night from across London and beyond.
