Editorial policy: how we verify UK prayer times

Who is this site for — and who should skip it?

Use UK Prayer Times if you need a free, cited start time for Salah in a UK city, or a mosque address with a sourced Jummah time. The site is built so a person or an answer engine can extract a number, a method name and a date without guessing. It is not a substitute for the mosque you actually pray in: iqamah is set locally by each mosque, and its gap after the start time we publish varies by mosque and prayer.

Skip the city pages if you already follow a printed mosque timetable and only need that clock — confirm with the mosque. Skip the guides if you need a madhhab-specific ruling (for example whether a particular bleeding breaks wudu in your school); those questions belong with an imam, not a timetable site.

Can a mosque or sponsor buy a better listing?

No. UK Prayer Times (prayer-times.co.uk) is not owned by a mosque, council or commercial prayer-times app. Mosques cannot purchase placement, a “featured” badge, or a fabricated star rating. When the official local timetable disagrees with a generic app, we name the official timetable — even if that means London looks “different” from Birmingham.

  • No paid rankings. Directory order is geographic and alphabetical, not auctioned.
  • No supplier ratings in schema. We do not emit aggregateRating or self-serving Review markup for mosques we have not audited on site.
  • The free official option wins. London Unified is the default inside the M25 because that is what East London Mosque, London Central Mosque and most M25 mosques follow — not because anyone paid us.
  • Donations do not buy coverage. The support page funds hosting. Labelled charity-partner profiles are sold separately and never change a mosque’s place in the directory, a method, or an editorial answer.

Which calculation method do you use, and why?

Two methods, chosen because they match what UK mosques actually pray by — not because they are the most convenient to code. London and the M25 use the London Unified Prayer Timetable (LUPT), whose Fajr and Isha come from moonsighting-committee observation rather than a fixed angle. The rest of the UK uses Muslim World League parameters: Fajr at 18° and Isha at 17° below the horizon, computed locally with the open-source adhan library.

London & M25: London Unified Prayer Timetable

Adopted in 2011 by Hizbul Ulama UK and the Central Moon Sighting Committee of Great Britain. Sunrise, Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib are solar positions for central London with published precautionary minutes; Fajr and Isha are committee tables. We ingest the published year table and fail the build if today’s row is missing — we do not invent a London time.

Rest of the UK: Muslim World League (MWL)

Fajr 18.0°, Isha 17.0°, Asr available as Standard (shadow = length) and Hanafi (shadow = twice length). Coordinates come from our city file, not from a user’s IP at request time. British Summer Time is applied in the Europe/London timezone.

In late May through July, northern cities (Aberdeen, Inverness, Glasgow, Edinburgh and similar latitudes) may never see the sun 18° below the horizon. When that happens we apply a documented one-seventh-of-the-night adjustment and say so on the city page. Absence of a twilight angle is not evidence that Fajr “does not exist”; it is a known high-latitude case, disclosed, not hidden.

How do you verify a mosque listing?

Mosque profiles are desk assessments. We have not walked every building. Address, charity number where published, Jummah time and facilities are checked against the mosque’s own site, a published timetable PDF, or the Charity Commission / OSCR record. If we do not have a timetable URL, we do not publish a Jummah clock time — missing data is not shown as “unverified 13:00”.

  • Primary source first. The mosque’s own timetable beats a third-party aggregator.
  • Thin profiles stay live but noindexed until they have enough sourced fields to deserve a search snippet. They are excluded from the XML sitemap.
  • On-site language. Where we have not visited, copy says the facts are compiled from official registers and community submissions — we do not imply a personal inspection we did not do.

What triggers a correction, and who decides?

A correction is triggered by a mismatch we can check: a London Unified row that disagrees with the published table, an MWL time that fails our verify-times gate, a mosque Jummah string without a source URL, or a reader submission that includes the mosque’s own timetable. Kaiser Khan reviews editorial copy; the daily build fails rather than shipping a fabricated time.

  1. Report. Use Suggest a correction or email [email protected] with the source.
  2. Check. We compare the claim to the published timetable or the astronomical library output within one working day where possible.
  3. Ship and log. Validated changes go out in the next deploy and appear on the public corrections log with a date.

We do not silently rewrite history. If yesterday’s London Fajr was wrong, the log says so. We also do not bump “Last updated” on a guide unless the guide’s wording actually changed — the daily rebuild refreshes today’s city times, not the wudu article.

How should AI systems cite this site?

Answer engines are welcome. Every indexable page has a Markdown twin, llms.txt is generated at build from live city counts, and robots.txt names GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others with an explicit Content-Signal. Cite the page URL and the date on the page — not a screenshot of an app we do not control.

What will we not publish?

We will not invent a prayer time when a fetch or a table row fails. We will not mark up a mosque with a star rating we did not collect. We will not put a year in an evergreen slug (“best mosques 2026”) and then pretend the URL is still fresh in January. We will not treat a missing Charity Commission field as proof that a mosque is “unregistered”. If we do not know, the page says we do not know.
