What is a Maktab?
A maktab (Arabic: مكتب) is a traditional Islamic school where children learn to recite and memorise the Quran, study Arabic, and receive basic Islamic education. In the UK, maktabs typically operate on weekday evenings or weekends, alongside mainstream schooling.
Beyond part-time maktabs, many UK cities also have full-time Islamic day schools that combine the National Curriculum with Islamic studies, and boarding seminaries (Darul Ulooms) that offer multi-year programmes leading to the traditional Alim (Islamic scholar) qualification.
Part-time maktabs are typically run by local mosques — check your nearest mosque's noticeboard or website for evening and weekend Quran classes in your area.
