Zakat Calculator

Calculate your annual Zakat obligation with live gold and silver nisab — cash, metals by weight or value, shares, ISA, crypto, pension and business assets, minus short-term debts.

Quick Answer

Total your zakatable assets (cash, gold, silver, investments, crypto, business stock), subtract short-term debts, and if the net amount meets the nisab — 612.36g of silver (52.5 tola) or 87.48g of gold (7.5 tola), updated daily with live prices — pay 2.5% as Zakat. On £1,000 above the nisab, that is £25.

This calculator follows the mainstream Hanafi method (silver nisab by default) and is for guidance only. Please consult a qualified Islamic scholar for rulings specific to your situation.

Worked example

Amina checks her finances on her Zakat anniversary:

£12,835 is well above the silver nisab, so Zakat is due: £12,835 × 2.5% = £320.88. Her wealth has been above the nisab all year, so the full amount is zakatable.

What is Zakat?

Zakat (Arabic: زكاة) is the third pillar of Islam — an obligatory annual payment of 2.5% on net savings that have been held for one full lunar year (Hawl) and exceed the minimum threshold (Nisab). It is a right of the poor upon the wealth of the rich, and purifies one's remaining wealth.

Zakat can be paid to eight categories specified in the Quran (9:60): the poor, the destitute, those who administer Zakat, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, to free captives, to those in debt, in the cause of Allah (fi sabilillah), and to the stranded traveller.

Zakat FAQ

How do I calculate Zakat in the UK?
Total your zakatable assets (cash, gold, silver, investments, crypto, business stock, receivables), subtract short-term debts due within the year, and if the net amount equals or exceeds the nisab, pay 2.5% as Zakat. The calculator above does this for you with live gold and silver prices.
What is the nisab for Zakat in 2026?
The nisab is 612.36g of silver (52.5 tola) or 87.48g of gold (7.5 tola). At indicative prices the silver nisab is roughly £850–£900 and the gold nisab roughly £8,000–£9,000 — the exact GBP figure changes daily with metal prices, which is why this calculator fetches live spot prices. Most UK charities and scholars recommend the silver standard because its lower threshold means more people fulfil the obligation and more of the poor are supported.
What is the Zakat rate?
Zakat is 2.5% — one-fortieth — of your net zakatable wealth that has been held above the nisab for one full lunar year (hawl). It is due on savings and investment wealth, not on your home, car or everyday belongings.
How much Zakat do I pay on £1,000?
£25. At 2.5%, every £1,000 of net zakatable wealth above the nisab carries £25 of Zakat — so £5,000 is £125 and £12,835 is £320.88.
What is a tola, and how does it convert to grams?
A tola is a traditional South Asian unit of weight equal to 11.664 grams. The silver nisab is 52.5 tola (612.36g) and the gold nisab is 7.5 tola (87.48g). Gold is also sold by the bori (12.5g) — the calculator converts grams, tola and bori for you.
Is gold jewellery subject to Zakat?
In the Hanafi school, all gold and silver is zakatable — including jewellery you wear — once its value (combined with your other savings) exceeds the nisab. Other schools exempt jewellery in regular personal use. Many UK Muslims follow the Hanafi view as the safer option; include your jewellery by weight above and the calculator prices the fine gold content by carat.
Do I pay Zakat on my pension?
Many scholars hold that a pension you cannot yet access (e.g. a pot locked until retirement) is not zakatable until you can draw it, while an accessible pot — or the portion you could withdraw today — is zakatable like other savings. Defined benefit (final salary) pensions are generally not zakatable before payout. Include only your accessible amount above, and consult a scholar for your scheme.
What is hawl?
Hawl is the passage of one full Islamic lunar year (~354 days) while your wealth stays above the nisab. Zakat becomes due on your hawl anniversary each year — not in Ramadan specifically, though many choose Ramadan for the greater reward. Use the .ics calendar reminder in the calculator to mark your next five anniversaries.
Can I deduct debts from my Zakat calculation?
Yes — short-term debts genuinely payable within the year are deductible: credit card balances, bills due now, BNPL instalments, and loan repayments falling due in the next 12 months. Do not deduct your home mortgage balance or the principal of long-term loans; only repayments actually due this year count, per the majority view.
Does Gift Aid count towards my Zakat?
No. Gift Aid is a UK government tax rebate the charity claims on top of your donation — it is not your money and does not form part of your 2.5% Zakat. Your Zakat is what you pay from your own wealth; ticking Gift Aid simply adds 25p per £1 for the charity at no cost to you.
