What is Namaz, and why do UK mosques say it?

Namaz (نماز) is the Persian and Urdu word for Salah (صَلَاة) — the same five obligatory prayers. In the UK, “Namaz times” is how many South Asian families search because that is the word used at home and on mosque noticeboards. The prayers are not a different ritual: Fajr, Dhuhr (often written Zohr), Asr, Maghrib and Isha. Only the language of the label changes.

   Fajr (فجر) — Pre-dawn

   Two rak'ahs. Performed before sunrise. The first Namaz of the day.

   Dhuhr / Zohr (ظهر) — Midday

   Four rak'ahs. Performed after the sun passes its zenith. Jummah replaces this on Fridays.

   Asr (عصر) — Afternoon

   Four rak'ahs. Hanafi Asr starts later than Standard — see below.

   Maghrib (مغرب) — After sunset

   Three rak'ahs. Performed immediately after sunset.

   Isha (عشاء) — Night

   Four rak'ahs. Performed at night, with Witr after in the Hanafi school.

Should you use Hanafi Asr for Namaz in the UK?

Yes, if you pray in a Hanafi mosque — which is most UK mosques serving Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Indian congregations. Hanafi Asr begins when an object’s shadow is twice its length (plus the noon shadow); Standard (Shafi'i/Maliki/Hanbali) Asr begins when the shadow equals its length. That is typically 30–60 minutes later. Switch Asr on any city page. Skip Hanafi Asr if your mosque follows Standard — follow the mosque you stand in, not a generic app default.
