About Al-Farooq Education and Community Centre (AFECC)
The building was designed by architect John Bennie Wilson and completed in 1892 as Hutchesontown Free Church. In 1929 it became Crosshill Victoria Free Church after a merger with a nearby congregation. From 1971 it was an art gallery and exhibition space, Maxwell Studios.
In 1998 the building was bought and opened as a mosque, and AFECC was formed. Later work included roof and main-hall renovations (2011–2014), a food bank (2015), new classrooms in the former gallery (2021) and a renovated sisters' space (2022). AFECC says it held Scotland's first Jumu'ah khutbah translated into British Sign Language in 2018.
