About Birmingham Central Mosque

Birmingham Central Mosque was the first purpose-built mosque in Birmingham and one of the earliest in the United Kingdom. Construction of the distinctive dome and minaret on the Belgrave Middleway began in the late 1960s and the mosque opened in stages from the mid-1970s, growing alongside the city's expanding Muslim population.

The mosque has long been a focal point for community life in Highgate, Balsall Heath and the inner city, with one of the largest Friday congregations in the West Midlands and a busy programme of Eid prayers, weddings and funerals each year.

In addition to its main prayer hall, the mosque runs an Islamic school, hifz programme, marriage and welfare services, and a strong interfaith and civic engagement tradition that has hosted royal visits, ambassadors and dignitaries from around the world.
