The centre is operated by the Karimia Institute, a Nottingham charity founded in 1990 by Dr Musharraf Hussain with the support of the local community. The mosque housed here is known as Masjid Ash-Shifa, and the institute's headquarters have remained at this site.

The centre is a multi-purpose hub rather than a purpose-built mosque. Alongside the Ash-Shifa prayer hall, the building houses the Karimia Institute's offices, the Zaytuna (Ofsted-registered) nursery, a Qur'an school, and the studios of Radio Dawn, a volunteer-run community faith radio station.

The mosque follows the Sunni Sufi/Barelvi tradition and primarily serves the local Pakistani-Kashmiri community, while providing education and welfare services to Muslims of all backgrounds. It accommodates both male and female worshippers, with Friday congregations held in two slots — the first jamaat at 1:40 PM and the second at 3:00 PM.
