About Masjid Noor El Islam
Butetown's Muslim community was founded largely by Yemeni and Somali seafarers. In the late 1930s houses on Peel Street were adapted for worship. On 11 November 1938 plans were approved for a mosque behind them, which the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales describes as Wales's first purpose-built mosque (architect Osborne V. Webb).
The mosque was destroyed in an air raid on 2 January 1941. A temporary replacement opened on 16 July 1943, and a permanent mosque followed in 1947. The present two-storey brick building at 17 Maria Street, designed by Forster Vining Architects, replaced the Peel Street mosque in 1988.
