What is the difference between Standard and Hanafi Asr?

Updated 2026-07-08

Quick Answer

Standard (Shafi’i/Maliki/Hanbali) Asr begins when an object’s shadow equals its length. Hanafi Asr waits until the shadow is twice the length — typically 30–60 minutes later in the UK.

In detail

Both are valid within their schools. Many UK mosques publish both. Use the Asr toggle on any city prayer times page to switch.

The London Unified table publishes Mithl 1 (standard) and Mithl 2 (Hanafi) Asr times.
