About Leicester Central Mosque (Conduit Street)
The Islamic Centre was set up in 1968 in converted houses on Sutherland Street, where local Muslims had prayed since about 1965. As the community grew, the trustees planned a purpose-built mosque in the city centre. Its foundation stone was laid on 27 August 1988 at a ceremony attended by scholars from Britain and abroad.
The mosque was built in phases. First came a main prayer hall for 1,500 people, then a basement ablution area, offices and a first-floor ladies' gallery for 300. Finally a school, community and sports hall, imam's residence, mortuary and guest house were added. Worshippers donated more than £2 million towards the cost.
