About Bargate Mosque & Shah Jalal Mosque
The Shah Jalal Mosque and Islamic Centre (also written Shahjalal Mosque and Islamic Centre, abbreviated SMIC) is a mosque and community centre at 121 St Mary's Road in the St Mary's / Northam area of central Southampton, Hampshire. It serves principally the city's Bangladeshi Muslim community and follows the Sunni Deobandi tradition. The mosque is named after Shah Jalal, the 14th-century Sufi saint revered across the Sylhet region of Bangladesh, from which much of Southampton's Bangladeshi population originates.
The organisation is a registered charity in England and Wales (Shahjalal Mosque and Islamic Centre Southampton, charity number 1070647), and is led by a committee drawn from the local Bangladeshi community. According to directory records it accommodates around 270 worshippers and provides facilities for both men and women.
Alongside the five daily prayers and Friday (Jummah) congregations, the centre runs an Islamic supplementary school offering evening and weekend classes for boys and girls in Qur'anic studies, Tajweed (recitation) and Islamic jurisprudence, as well as study circles for adults. It also functions as a community hub, hosting events particularly during Ramadan, including communal iftars.
Note on location: St Mary's Road sits within Southampton's St Mary's / Bargate city-centre district, an area with several mosques in close proximity. The Shah Jalal Mosque is at St Mary's Road, SO14 0BL — it should not be confused with the separate Masjid Ar-Rahmah / Southampton Jamia Masjid on nearby Northumberland Road (SO14 0EL), which is a distinct, Pakistani-led congregation.
