About Edinburgh Central Mosque
Edinburgh Central Mosque, also known as the King Fahd Mosque & Islamic Centre, was officially opened in 1998 and is the principal mosque for the Scottish capital's Muslim community. The building was funded by King Fahd of Saudi Arabia and designed by Basil Al-Bayati to blend traditional Islamic forms with the local Edinburgh sandstone tradition.
Located on Potterrow next to the University of Edinburgh, the mosque has long served the city's mix of long-established families, students and visitors from around the world. Its prayer hall can hold over 1,000 worshippers, and the centre includes a women's prayer area, library, café, halal restaurant and meeting rooms used for community and interfaith events.
