Do I pay Zakat on gold jewellery in the UK?

Updated 2026-07-28

Quick Answer

In the Hanafi school, gold and silver jewellery is zakatable once your net wealth meets the Nisab. Other schools often exempt jewellery in regular personal use. Many UK Muslims follow the safer Hanafi view — include jewellery by weight in our calculator and it prices the fine gold by carat.

In detail

Zakat is due on wealth held above the Nisab for one lunar year (hawl). Jewellery is wealth in metallic form.

If you follow a school that exempts worn jewellery, consult a trusted scholar for your situation — we do not issue fatwas.

Our calculator converts grams, tola and bori and applies live gold spot prices to the fine-gold content.

Is white gold or plated jewellery zakatable?
Zakat is assessed on the gold or silver content. Gold-plated items with negligible precious metal are generally not zakatable as gold; ask a scholar if unsure.
