About York Mosque & Islamic Centre

York Mosque & Islamic Centre is the principal mosque serving York's Muslim community and operates as a branch of the United Kingdom Islamic Mission (UKIM), the national Islamic organisation founded in 1962. It is located on Bull Lane, off Lawrence Street, in the YO10 area of the city. The mosque's own visitor materials describe a small, multinational community frequented by student families from York's universities and by visitors from surrounding cities.

The site originally housed a small single-storey red-brick mosque. After more than ten years of planning and fundraising — with planning applications to City of York Council from around 2011 and construction beginning around 2015 — the congregation opened a new purpose-built mosque on the Bull Lane site in late 2018 (reported as 24 November 2018). The original one-storey building remains on the site and is still used for some activities, referred to locally as the "old mosque".

The centre is noted for its community engagement. It joined the Muslim Council of Britain in 2000, and the MCB has highlighted its outreach, including responding to a 2013 English Defence League protest by offering tea, biscuits and a game of football, supporting flood relief in 2015, and winning a "Local Heroes" award in 2016. Alongside the five daily congregational prayers, the mosque runs a children's madrassah, a scouts group, GCSE tuition, women's and men's halaqahs, and a community kitchen.
