About Wigan Central Mosque

Wigan Central Masjid is a mosque and community project led by the Impact Community Group, a Wigan-based organisation (a company limited by guarantee, company number 13564284; a linked entity, Impact Community Charity, is registered with the Charity Commission as number 1210167 at the same address). It occupies a 19th-century former church building at 240 Warrington Road in Ince-in-Makerfield, on the south-eastern side of Wigan. The site was previously a Church of England parish church (St Mary, Ince) before being taken over by the group and licensed as a place of worship. The mosque's own materials describe a large structure of roughly 500 square metres.

The Impact Community Group is converting the building into a multi-purpose centre that combines a prayer space with wider community services, including a madrasa offering religious and secular education, a food bank open to people of all faiths and none, and a community hub for social and cultural events. The group has publicly stressed that the food bank is intended to serve the whole local community rather than any single faith group.

The conversion has been funded through public fundraising appeals (including GoFundMe, MuslimGiving and LaunchGood campaigns) with a stated renovation budget of around £200,000, and as of the latest available information the project remained in an active fundraising and refurbishment phase rather than being fully completed. In 2024 the building was targeted in an arson attack that Greater Manchester Police investigated as a hate crime; the attack was condemned by local figures and Church of England authorities, and criminal proceedings followed.
