About Telford Central Mosque
Telford Central Mosque is run by the Shropshire Islamic Foundation, a registered charity (CIO no. 1194272) serving the Muslim community of Telford and the surrounding parts of Shropshire. The community's roots go back to the 1970s, when the small number of Muslim families then living in the area — mostly from the Indian Subcontinent — purchased a former church building in Wellington and converted it into the area's first mosque, known as Tan Bank Mosque (41 Tan Bank, TF1 1HW). This was the first mosque in Telford and in the whole of Shropshire.
As the community grew, the Foundation acquired a disused Territorial Army building at 88-90 King Street, Wellington, in 2005 and obtained planning permission in 2007 to convert it into a much larger central mosque. Construction of the new Telford Central Mosque began in 2010 on the King Street site, with Phase 1 (the first floor) completed to provide prayer space for around 700 worshippers, including dedicated prayer facilities for women — described as the first such women's prayer provision in Shropshire. A second-floor expansion is planned subject to funding.
The mosque follows the Hanafi school within the Deobandi tradition. Alongside the five daily prayers, Friday Jumu'ah, Taraweeh in Ramadan and Eid prayers, the Foundation runs the Telford Islamic Academy, providing Qur'anic and Arabic instruction for boys and girls, plus adult education and madrasah classes. An associated ladies' association (STUWA) holds a variety of classes, and the mosque also provides Janazah (funeral) prayer services and marriage services for the local community.
