About Cheadle Masjid (Cheadle Muslim Association)
Cheadle Masjid is run by the Cheadle Muslim Association (CMA) and is one of the largest and most active mosques in the Stockport borough, serving Cheadle, Heald Green and the wider Greater Manchester Muslim community. The mosque occupies the former St Columba's Church on Wilmslow Road — a building that opened as a Presbyterian (later United Reformed) church in 1964 — which the association acquired and opened for worship in January 2004. Having outgrown the converted church, the CMA secured planning permission and is delivering a multi-million-pound, purpose-built mosque and community centre on the site, with construction work beginning in 2021. Today it offers daily and Friday congregational prayers alongside a broad programme of education, youth, women's and interfaith activities.
The mosque is housed in a converted 1960s church (the former St Columba's), which opened its doors as Cheadle Masjid in January 2004. The Cheadle Muslim Association is delivering a roughly GBP 5 million purpose-built mosque and community centre on the site, after the original building's roughly 400-person capacity was repeatedly overwhelmed by worshippers spilling into the car park. As part of its redevelopment the mosque partnered with Manchester firm Be.EV to install free public electric-vehicle charging points, making it one of the area's faith venues to host an EV charging hub.
