About Essex Jamme Masjid
Essex Jamme Masjid was established in 1986. The community raised £15,000 between February and September 1986 and purchased a converted car workshop at 53-55 Milton Road, Southend, for £55,000; the first prayer (Dhuhr) was held there in November 1986. The congregation outgrew the site and relocated to a converted former church at 48 Chelmsford Avenue, Westcliff-on-Sea, which opened on 1 August 2008 with the first Jummah led by Dr Omar Khatib. It is run by The Essex Jamme Masjid Trust (registered charity no. 298705, registered 28 March 1988; company no. 02023311). Today it is the principal mosque serving Southend-on-Sea, with over 1,200 men and women attending weekly Jummah prayers and a community of 62+ nationalities (around 60% under age 34). It functions as a community centre offering five daily prayers, a weekend academy, Hifz and Alimiyyah/madrasah classes, plus advice, counselling, marriage and funeral services.
