About Madina Masjid (Wolseley Road)
Madina Masjid, also known as the Wolseley Road Mosque and run by the Sheffield Islamic Centre Madina Masjid Trust, is the first and largest purpose-built mosque in Sheffield. The community searched for around fifteen years for a suitable site in the south of the city, having previously used a converted former Co-op building. Construction on Wolseley Road began in September 2004 and the mosque opened in October 2006.
The project was funded almost entirely by the local community, who raised several million pounds toward the estimated £5 million cost. The resulting Islamic centre contains 19 rooms and two large halls, along with a library and a day centre. The brick-built mosque is a landmark on the Sheffield skyline, with a large central dome and two minarets, and a capacity of around 2,300 male and female worshippers.
The mosque follows the Sunni Barelwi (Sufi) tradition and serves the Sharrow, Nether Edge and Lowfield areas. Beyond the five daily prayers and Friday Jummah, it runs a madrasah and offers community services including Nikah, Ghusl and Janazah support, Ramadan programmes, and educational open days, tours and interfaith events.
