About Jamia Masjid (Newport)
Jamia Mosque (also styled Jamia Masjid) is a mosque on Commercial Road in the Pillgwenlly area of Newport, South Wales, serving the local Muslim community. Its full name is the Jamia Hanfia Rizvia Mosque, reflecting the Hanafi Sunni tradition within the Barelwi school, and it is registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales as the Jamia Hanfia Rizvia Mosque Trust (charity number 1140778). The charity's current governing trust deed is dated 1 December 2010.
The mosque is operated together with the nearby Al Noor Mosque (23A Harrow Road, NP19 0BU) under the umbrella of "Al Noor and Jamia Mosque Newport". According to the organisation, the two mosques have cared for the religious, spiritual and pastoral needs of the local community for many years, with a particular focus on educating Muslims of all ages, especially young people.
Alongside the five daily prayers, Friday Jummah and the two annual Eid prayers, the institution provides Islamic education for children and adults, funeral (Janazah) prayers and wedding ceremonies, all held at the mosque. Wider community activities run across the two sites include monthly English-language Islamic lectures, children's events such as Eid parties and "Friday fun days", sporting activities for young people, and online classes and live events.
The Commercial Road building accommodates both men and women, with a reported prayer capacity of about 350. Facilities include a separate women's prayer area and ablution (wudu) rooms with toilet facilities for both men and women.
