About Masjid-e-Noor (Lancaster Islamic Society)
A small group of Muslims in the Lancaster area founded the Lancaster Islamic Society in 1972. It first leased and later bought premises at Howarden Cottages at the end of Hinde Street, and the mosque stayed there until the late 1980s.
To be closer to the main Muslim community, the society then bought a long-disused former church on Fenton Street in the city centre. After extensive refurbishment the mosque, Masjid-e-Noor, was completed in the early 1990s. The society plans to extend the prayer hall and hopes eventually to build a purpose-built mosque.
