About Hastings Mosque

Hastings Mosque, known in Arabic as Masjid Al-Haq, occupies the Grade II listed former Mercatoria National School, a Church of England school built in 1847 by architect Decimus Burton. In the mid-1980s a small group of local Muslims founded the East Sussex Islamic Association (Hastings), purchased part of the old school building, and opened it as a working mosque in 1985. It is the only mosque serving Hastings and the surrounding Rother area, and the East Sussex Islamic Association is a registered charity (CIO no. 1165989, registered 2016).
