What is Jummah?

Jummah (also spelled Jumu'ah or Jumuah) is the Friday congregational prayer — the most significant weekly act of worship in Islam. The word comes from the Arabic root meaning 'to gather', and Friday is called Yawm al-Jumu'ah (the Day of Gathering). Jummah prayer consists of a sermon (khutbah) followed by a shortened two-unit (rak'ah) prayer, and is obligatory for adult Muslim men.

Jummah: The congregational Friday prayer — the most important weekly prayer in Islam, replacing Dhuhr for men.

The obligation of Jummah

Allah commands in the Qur'an: 'O you who believe! When the call is proclaimed for the prayer on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.' (Surah al-Jumu'ah, 62:9). Jummah is obligatory (fard) for adult Muslim men who are resident, healthy, and not travelling. Women, children, travellers, the ill, and the elderly are excused, though they may attend.

Structure of Jummah prayer

Jummah consists of: (1) The first Adhan, called when the imam ascends the minbar (pulpit); (2) The khutbah (sermon) in two parts, with a short sitting in between — listening to the khutbah is obligatory; (3) The second Adhan (Iqamah); (4) Two rak'ahs of congregational prayer led by the imam — this replaces the four-rak'ah Dhuhr prayer. Optional sunnah prayers are typically prayed before and after.

Preparation for Jummah

The Prophet ﷺ encouraged specific preparations for Friday: performing ghusl (full body wash), wearing clean clothes, applying perfume (for men), arriving early at the mosque, reciting Surah al-Kahf, and sending abundant salawat (blessings) upon the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday.' (Sahih Muslim 854).

Jummah times in the UK

UK mosques typically hold Jummah between 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM, though the exact time varies by mosque and season (it must fall within Dhuhr prayer time). Many larger mosques hold two or three Jummah sessions to accommodate worshippers. Always confirm the khutbah start time with your local mosque as times change seasonally.
