About Cambridge Central Mosque

Cambridge Central Mosque, opened in 2019, is widely celebrated as Europe's first eco-mosque and one of the most architecturally significant religious buildings of recent years in the United Kingdom. It was designed by Marks Barfield Architects in collaboration with Professor Keith Critchlow and landscape designer Emma Clark, drawing inspiration from the geometric traditions of Islamic and English Gothic architecture.

The mosque's most striking feature is a forest of timber "trees" — interlocking laminated spruce columns that support the roof and create a calm, contemplative atmosphere reminiscent of an English orchard. The building uses ground-source heat pumps, photovoltaic panels and rainwater harvesting, and was designed to be carbon-neutral in its day-to-day operations.

It serves the city's diverse Muslim community of students, academics and long-established families, with daily prayers, Jumu'ah, taraweeh, weekend classes and a busy interfaith and visitor programme. The mosque garden, café and prayer hall are open to the public outside prayer times.
