About Khizra Mosque & Islamic Centre (Jamia Khizra Masjid)
Khizra Mosque, formally the Jamia Khizra Masjid & Islamic Centre, was Bury's first ever Muslim place of worship, established in 1969 to serve the town's growing South Asian Muslim community. From its original base on Walmersley Road it has expanded over the decades into a multi-site institution, today running a second, larger premises on Parker Street in Bury town centre. Beyond daily and Friday prayers, the centre offers religious education and acts as a focal point for the local Muslim community.
It is recognised as the first Muslim place of worship ever established in Bury, dating back to 1969. The mosque operates across two sites in the town — the original Walmersley Road premises and a larger town-centre building on Parker Street with capacity for around 1,200 worshippers. It serves as a designated Hate Crime Reporting Centre, allowing members of the public to report incidents through the mosque.
