About Madinat al-Zahra Grand Mosque
Minhaj-ul-Quran International began discussions to buy the Bartle Lane site in late 2012. It submitted a full planning application (15/06524/MAF) and listed building consent (16/01881/LBC) in November 2015, and planning approval followed in June 2016. Demolition and conversion of a temporary building on the site began in February 2017.
The new mosque's golden dome was installed on 30 September 2025. The project is planned as a four-part complex of mosque, community centre, boarding school and retail units, and it is described as a flagship UK project of Minhaj-ul-Quran International.
