About Ashton-under-Lyne Central Mosque

Ashton Central Mosque is the first and longest-established mosque in Ashton-under-Lyne, founded in the early 1970s as the Markazi Jami'a Mosque in a terraced property on Stamford Street. The community relocated to the former St Mary's School on Newton Street in 1979 before moving into its purpose-built three-floor home on Hillgate Street in October 2011, with prayer capacity for over 1,000 worshippers. It is run by the Ashton Central Mosque Charitable Trust (registered charity no. 1121224) and in 2023 received the British Beacon Mosque Award for Best Run Mosque. Alongside the five daily prayers it provides a madrasah, funeral services, a foodbank, a Zakat clinic and community-centre facilities.
