## About Madina Masjid (Oldham)

Madina Masjid & Islamic Centre (MMIC) is one of the oldest mosques in Oldham, established in 1987 by the town's British Bangladeshi community. It occupies a historic building on Stansfield Street in the Coldhurst area: the structure was originally the Coldhurst Church of England Junior School, dating back to 1881, and was later converted in 1963 into a Ukrainian Catholic Church dedicated to SS. Peter and Paul. The Bangladeshi community purchased the building and established the current mosque in 1987.

The mosque serves a predominantly British Bangladeshi congregation and offers the five daily prayers and Friday (Jummah) sermons, with khutbahs delivered in Bengali, English and Arabic. Following an extension approved in 2013 and completed in 2014, the prayer hall's combined capacity grew to around 1,000 worshippers. The building features traditional mosque elements including a mihrab (prayer niche), mimbar (pulpit) and domes.

Beyond daily worship, MMIC runs evening Maktab classes providing Quran and Hifz (memorisation) tuition for children, and holds an annual Darul Qirat summer course teaching authentic Quranic recitation. The centre also hosts community activities such as Nikah (marriage) ceremonies, Ramadan iftar gatherings, Taraweeh prayers, Eid celebrations, monthly Halaqah study circles and guest-speaker events.

In 2021, the mosque opened a dedicated funeral services facility (construction having begun in 2019), offering Janazah (funeral) prayers, Ghusl and Kafan (washing and shrouding) services, headstones, burials and repatriation of bodies abroad.
