As the community grew, the trustees planned a purpose-built mosque in the city centre. Its foundation stone was laid on 27 August 1988 at a ceremony attended by scholars from Britain and abroad. The mosque was built in phases. First came a main prayer hall for 1,500 people, then a basement ablution area, offices and a first-floor ladies' gallery for 300. Finally a school, community and sports hall, imam's residence, mortuary and guest house were added. Worshippers donated more than £2 million towards the cost.
