The basics

## The five daily prayers (Salah / Namaz / Salat)

Every Muslim performs five daily prayers at times set by the sun’s position. The times change a little every day and vary across UK cities by latitude and longitude.

Fajr Dawn

The pre-dawn prayer, beginning at true dawn and ending at sunrise. In the UK, Fajr ranges from around 2:30 AM in midsummer to 7:00 AM in midwinter.

Dhuhr Midday

The midday prayer, beginning just after the sun passes its zenith (solar noon). In the UK, Dhuhr is typically around 1:00–1:15 PM all year.

Asr Afternoon

The afternoon prayer. The Standard (Shafi’i) method begins Asr when an object’s shadow equals its length; the Hanafi method uses twice the shadow length (later).

Maghrib Sunset

The sunset prayer, beginning immediately at sunset — one of the shortest windows. It ranges from around 3:30 PM in December to 9:30 PM in June.

Isha Night

The night prayer, beginning when the twilight fully disappears. It ranges from around 6:30 PM in winter to past midnight in midsummer.

## Frequently asked questions

What are the five daily prayers in Islam?

The five daily prayers are Fajr (pre-dawn), Dhuhr (midday), Asr (afternoon), Maghrib (at sunset) and Isha (at night). They are obligatory for every Muslim and known as Salah, Namaz or Salat depending on language. Each prayer has a specific time window determined by the sun’s position.

What time is Fajr prayer today in the UK?

Fajr time varies by city and date. Fajr begins at true dawn — approximately 1.5 to 2 hours before sunrise. In summer, Fajr can be as early as 2:30 AM in northern UK cities; in winter it is typically around 6:30–7:00 AM. Select your city to see today’s exact Fajr time.

What time is Maghrib prayer in the UK today?

Maghrib begins at sunset. In summer, sunset in the UK can be after 9:00 PM; in winter it can be as early as 3:30 PM. Select your city to see today’s exact Maghrib time.

What time is Isha prayer in the UK?

Isha begins when the red twilight disappears after sunset. Using the Muslim World League method, Isha ranges from around 6:30 PM in winter to past midnight in midsummer. Many UK mosques use adjusted Isha times in summer months to make congregational prayer practical.

Which prayer time method is used for UK Muslims?

The Muslim World League (MWL) method is the standard for UK Muslims — Fajr at 18° and Isha at 17° below the horizon. This site uses MWL by default, with options to switch to ISNA, Egyptian, or Hanafi Asr.

Why do prayer times change every day?

Prayer times are based on the sun’s position — Fajr at dawn, Dhuhr at solar noon, Maghrib at sunset, and so on. Because the Earth tilts on its axis as it orbits the sun, sunrise and sunset shift slightly every day of the year, and prayer times shift with them.

What is Jummah time in the UK?

Jummah (Friday prayer) is typically held shortly after Dhuhr time — most UK mosques between 12:30 PM and 2:00 PM. Larger mosques often hold 2–3 sessions. Check individual mosque pages on this site for specific Jummah times.

Is Hanafi Asr time different from Standard Asr?

Yes. The Hanafi school calculates Asr when an object’s shadow is twice its length (later), while the Standard (Shafi’i/Maliki/Hanbali) method uses once the shadow equals its length — typically 30–60 minutes earlier. You can switch between both on each city’s prayer times page.

What is the difference between Salah, Namaz and Salat?

Salah (Arabic), Namaz (Urdu/Persian) and Salat are all terms for Islamic ritual prayer — the five daily prayers obligatory on every Muslim. They differ only by language of origin, not in meaning or practice.

Is this prayer times service really free?

Yes — completely free, with no adverts and no tracking. UK Prayer Times is an independent, not-for-profit service. There are no fees and no sign-up required. It is kept running by voluntary donations.
