## About Central Jamia Mosque Madni and Education Centre

The Central Jamia Mosque Madni is the largest mosque in Halifax, occupying a row of converted buildings on Gibbet Street to the west of the town centre. It traces its origins to the 1980s, growing alongside the town's well-established Muslim community of mainly Pakistani heritage, and today operates as both a place of worship and an education centre under the registered charity "Central Jamia Mosque Madni and Education Centre, Halifax" (charity no. 1063058). With room for around 2,500 worshippers it serves as the central congregational (jamia) mosque for the area, hosting the daily five prayers, the Friday Jummah and Ramadan Taraweeh. In 2010 the trustees brought forward plans, reported in the Halifax Courier, to roughly double the building's size and give it a more traditional Islamic appearance with a dome, minaret and stone arches.

With a capacity of around 2,500 worshippers it is the largest mosque in Halifax, far bigger than the town's other masjids. It follows the Sunni Barelvi (Sufi) tradition and is led by the local Pakistani-heritage community. Alongside prayers it runs a Dar-ul-Uloom / education centre offering Quran, Tajweed, Fiqh and Arabic classes for children and adults, which is why it carries the formal name 'and Education Centre'.
