The Prophet ﷺ taught specific duas for entering and leaving the mosque. These duas acknowledge the sacred nature of the masjid — the house of Allah — and invoke peace and blessings.

بِسْمِ اللهِ، وَالصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِ اللهِ، اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ

Transliteration

Bismillāh, wa-ṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā rasūlillāh. Allāhumma-ftaḥ lī abwāba raḥmatik.

Translation

In the name of Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy.

Source: Sahih Muslim 713, narrated by Abu Humaid or Abu Usayd (RA)

When to recite

- Upon entering any mosque, with the right foot first.
- Said quietly — this is a personal supplication, not announced aloud.

Virtues & Benefits

- Entering with the right foot and the dua is the Prophet's ﷺ Sunnah.
- Opens with salawat on the Prophet ﷺ — sending blessings which are returned tenfold (Sahih Muslim 384).
- Asks Allah to open the gates of mercy — an apt request in the house of Allah.
