## About South Wales Islamic Centre (Butetown)

The South Wales Islamic Centre in Butetown traces its origins to one of the oldest Muslim communities in the United Kingdom. From the 1860s onwards, Yemeni and Somali sailors began settling around Cardiff Bay's Tiger Bay docks, forming the first established Muslim communities in Wales.

In 1947 the community opened the Noor-el-Islam Mosque on Maria Street, often described as the first purpose-built mosque in Wales. The South Wales Islamic Centre on Alice Street continued and expanded this heritage, providing a larger prayer hall and community facilities for what is now a diverse multi-ethnic congregation.

The centre hosts daily prayers, a busy Friday Jumu'ah and a programme of educational and cultural activities celebrating the rich Yemeni, Somali and South Asian heritage of Cardiff's historic Muslim community.
