In the late 1930s houses on Peel Street were adapted for worship. On 11 November 1938 plans were approved for a mosque behind them, which the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales describes as Wales's first purpose-built mosque (architect Osborne V. Webb). The mosque was destroyed in an air raid on 2 January 1941. A temporary replacement opened on 16 July 1943, and a permanent mosque followed in 1947. The present two-storey brick building at 17 Maria Street, designed by Forster Vining Architects, replaced the Peel Street mosque in 1988.
